Over the decades, White Hart Lane was graced by many skillful players who terrorised opposition defences and enchanted the lilywhite faithful. But one legend towers above everyone not just for Tottenham but for all of English football. Jimmy Greaves.
A prolific goalscorer, he went on to be the all time top goal getter for Spurs as well as all of English top division football. Jimmy joined Spurs from AC Milan for a very peculiar 99,999 pounds which was done so as to relieve him off the pressure of being the first 100,000 pound man in football.
Little did we know, no pressure was big enough for the man who scored for fun, racking up a mighty tally of 266 goals in 379 appearances for Spurs including 15 hat-tricks both of which club records. The master marksman went on to win 2 FA cups, 1 charity shield and a European cup winner’s cup in his time at Tottenham before leaving for West Ham in 1970. Jimmy was given a testimonial against Feyenoord in 1972. Jimmy finished his career as the fourth-highest goalscorer for England with 44 goals and a record 6 hat-tricks for the three Lions.
In 2002, Jimmy Greaves was inducted to the English Football Hall of Fame, as a testament to the illustrious and prolific career he had in England. In 2021 New Year’s day he was given MBE by the Queen to solidify his place in English football history.
